The White House/First Lady announced a few months back that they would single handedly solve the decidedly sad story regarding honeybees. Well, not exactly, but in addition to the wildly popular First Garden, FLOTUS has authorized a First Beehive (FBhOTUS??), thus delighting the very vocal US beekeeper community.
The upkeep has gone to Charlie Brandts, who worked as a White House carpenter and raised bees in his free time. When White House Chef Sam Kass heard about Brandts’ hobby, he asked him to make honey for the White House kitchen. Now, Brandts been promoted to First Beekeeper, and earned his keep by producing a whopping 43 pounds of honey for the first pull in July. Sadly, the public won’t get a chance to sample the citrusy honey, as most will be used in the kitchen or as gifts. The bees will also help with pollination of the nearby First Garden.
