The National Geographic Society presented the POTUS with a one of a kind National Geographic map cabinet. Well, almost one of a kind. Turns out that every pack rat’s fave magazine company has been handing out these cabinets like so many candy: even cartographically challenged Bush received one in 2002, along with every prez since FDR. The collection of map cabinets resides (where else?) in the White House Map Room.
Obama wasn’t deterred, though. He exclaimed that this was “one gift I will definitely keep,” and explained that the Obama family loves maps for their tactile quality. Does this mean he didn’t keep the Saudi bling? In addition to the cabinet, Sasha and Malia received specialized children’s atlases and Michelle received a family reference atlas.
